Dibrugarh, Aug 22: The Dibrugarh district administration on Friday carried out an eviction drive near the Chief Minister’s Secretariat at Paltan Bazar, Maijan, clearing what it described as illegal encroachments on government land.
Using bulldozers, officials demolished several houses said to have been built without authorisation. Authorities informed that the cleared land will be developed for new establishments under the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, where the foundation stone was recently laid.

Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation Mayor Dr. Saikat Patra said, “The land was encroached illegally, and houses were constructed. Around five to six houses were removed during the drive.”
The eviction, however, triggered protests from affected families, who claimed they had lived on the land for decades and possessed valid documents. “Since 1957, we have been living here. The government allotted us this land, and we have the papers. A case is pending in court, with the next hearing on September 4, 2025. We haven’t received any compensation,” said Riza Khan, a resident of Maijan.
