Ex- South Tura MLA urges DC to enforce ‘Silence Zone’ around Tura Maternity Hospital during Puja

Must read

Tura, Sept 24: Former South Tura legislator John Leslee K Sangma has written to the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills requesting steps to maintain the Silence Zone around the Maternity Hospital area during Puja celebrations.

The area is home to the Newborn ICU unit, which is equipped with specialized medical technology for critically ill newborn babies.

Sangma informed that the Ganesh Puja immersion procession on August 31, 2025, exceeded the permissible noise limit of 50 decibels, reaching levels of over 110 decibels. This caused significant disturbance to the patients in the maternity hospital and ICU unit, which is located within 40-50 meters of the procession route.

“It is very clear that the central puja committee and the district administration had inadvertently failed to follow/maintain the law of the land which has caused much suffering and inconvenience to the patients,” he said.

Sangma also requested immediate action against a contractor currently violating the Silence Zone law by using a hammer drill, causing noise levels of over 110-114 decibels.

“I, therefore, request you to kindly look into the matter and take serious steps so that such lapses are not repeated by the district administration during the immersion procession of the coming Durga procession on October 2, and the interest and welfare of the patients of Maternity Hospital is safeguarded as per the provision of law…”

Sangma has also submitted suggestions to mitigate these issues.

He suggested that the procession may be rerouted  – starting from parade ground via Tura Bazar , Rikman ( to avoid Police Hospital ) through SP Office , DC Court to immersion place.
If the same route is selected ,Silence zone banner be set up immediately after crossing Hawakhana Petrol Pump  operational till Old Circuit junction

He said the Puja mandap Committee not the CPC should be held accountable for any violation  and no sound system should be allowed in vehicles without   permission .

Permission should not be given for pandals on public ( PWD )  road and puja related constructions should not create any obstruction to traffic and general public, he added.
