Guwahati, July 10: In a tragic incident, a man and his minor son were killed in a wild elephant attack late on Wednesday night in Assam’s Goalpara district.
The incident happened at Kashibari village under the Lakhipur Forest Division of Assam.
The deceased has been identified as Loskar Rabha and his son Rupsagar Rabha.
Loskar Rabha was a temporary assistant forest official.
According to officials, they were on foot in the Lakhipur range when they were attacked by a herd of wild elephants.
According to reports, the herd, which consists of around 40 elephants, has been present in the Lakhipur region for the past six days.
“The father and son were trampled to death by a wild elephant on Wednesday night. The elephant suddenly came into an inhabited area and created havoc before killing father and son,” said an official.
Human-elephant conflict has been rising rapidly due to the shrinking of forest cover, and as a result, the elephants are entering human habitation, resulting in conflict.
According to a recent Wildlife Institute of India (WII) report, over 1,400 humans died and 1,209 elephant fatalities were recorded between 2000 and 2023 in Assam.
The report says the rise in conflicts is directly tied to deforestation, expanding human settlements, and the lure of high-energy crops like paddy.
“With their traditional corridors degraded or blocked, elephants are forced to traverse farmland and villages — particularly during the harvest season — where they encounter both food and fatal risks,” the report says.
