Shillong, June 2: For a group of students from Meghalaya, a recent visit to Telangana became much more than an educational tour. The exchange offered a firsthand experience of the state’s culture, heritage, innovation ecosystem and academic institutions, while highlighting the diversity that binds India together beyond classrooms and textbooks.

As part of Yuva Sangam Phase VI, an initiative of the Ministry of Education under the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ programme, a student delegation led by the Indian Institute of Management Shillong embarked on an immersive exchange to Telangana, fostering national integration, cultural understanding, and youth empowerment.

Hosted by the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal, the students immersed themselves in the state’s educational institutions, historical monuments, innovation centers, and diverse cultural tapestry for close to a week.

The delegation was warmly received at NIT Warangal on May 25, marking the beginning of an engaging blend of learning and cultural exploration. From walking the corridors of a premier technical institution to conversing with local students and researchers, the participants gained valuable insights into academic excellence and the latest technological advancements.

A significant event was the interactive session with Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla at Lok Bhavan in Hyderabad on May 28.

During this engagement, the Governor emphasized the pivotal role of youth in bolstering national unity, promoting cultural appreciation, and actively participating in nation-building. The students shared their experiences from the trip and presented the Governor with a memento, symbolizing friendship and mutual regard.

The students’ itinerary thoughtfully encapsulated the unique historical and modern character of Telangana.

They visited iconic sites such as Hussain Sagar Lake, the Statue of Equality, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ramappa Temple, Warangal Fort, Bhadrakali Temple, and the renowned Thousand Pillar Temple. The visits provided a glimpse into the architectural marvels, spiritual traditions, and cultural heritage that have shaped the identity of South India for centuries.

The educational aspect extended beyond history.

At T-Hub, one of India’s foremost startup and innovation hubs, students were introduced to the country’s rapidly evolving entrepreneurial landscape. The visit offered them an insight into emerging technologies, startup culture, and the increasing influence of innovation in fostering economic growth.

At Kanha Shanti Vanam, participants engaged in practices focused on mindfulness, well-being, and holistic development, presenting a different dimension to personal growth and leadership.

The delegation also contributed to the environment by participating in a plantation drive at NIT Warangal, underscoring the significance of environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

More importantly, the program facilitated numerous opportunities for informal interactions, discussions, and the formation of friendships among young individuals from across the nation. These exchanges often emerge as the most enduring outcomes of such programs, enhancing participants’ understanding of diverse cultures, perspectives, and aspirations.

The Yuva Sangam initiative, launched by the Department of Higher Education, aims to connect youth from 22 paired States and Union Territories through enriching educational and cultural exchanges, ultimately strengthening emotional integration and building a deeper appreciation of India’s vast diversity among the future generation.

The Meghalaya delegation concluded its journey with a valedictory ceremony on May 30 before departing for home the following day. While the visit lasted only a few days, it offered lessons and experiences that are likely to stay with the participants long after the journey ended.

For the students, Yuva Sangam was not merely a trip across states. It was an opportunity to experience a different culture firsthand, forge new friendships, and discover how India’s many languages, traditions and identities come together through shared experiences, curiosity and mutual understanding.
