Gambegre open for a new representative as Saleng resigns from Meghalaya Assembly leaving Garo Hills without any Congress MLA

Must read

Tura, JUNE 10: The Gambegre assembly seat is going to see a new face as its elected representative in the coming by-election after Saleng A Sangma tendered his resignation as an MLA of the state on June 10th in the light of his victory as the new Tura Lok Sabha MP.

Saleng tendered his resignation letter from the Meghalaya Assembly on Monday.

The letter was addressed to Speaker Thomas A Sangma and submitted to the Meghalaya Assembly Secretariat on Monday at 11:46 AM.

His resignation also diminishes the Congress strength in the assembly, especially in the Garo Hills where there is no longer any Congress representative from the region in the state assembly.

Saleng’s victory in the just concluded Lok Sabha elections from Tura constituency has also reduced the number of Congress MLAs to four- in equal number to that of the Khasi regional party Voice of the People (VPP).

It also opens up the contest for a by-election to Gambegre assembly constituency in West Garo Hills that was held by Saleng for a record 4 terms.

A new legislator has to be elected through a by-election within 6 months, as mandated by the Election Commission of India.
