Tura, June 10: A two-day capacity-building workshop for forest field staff was held at Tura to boost their preparedness in dealing with emerging wildlife challenges on the ground.
The programme, which concluded on June 10, was held at the Conservator of Forests (CF) Conference Hall in Dakopgre. It was organised by the East and West Garo Hills Wildlife Division in partnership with conservation NGO Aaranyak and the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB).
The training was funded under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) scheme for 2024–2025 and supported by the Department of Forests and Environment, Government of Meghalaya.
Over 60 frontline staff—including deputy rangers, range officers, forest guards, and other personnel from East and West Garo Hills—participated in the sessions.
The comprehensive training included modules on the identification and illegal trade of wildlife products, camera trapping techniques, snake rescue and handling protocols, snakebite prevention, wildlife crime laws, elephant behaviour and ecology, and strategies to mitigate human-elephant conflict—an issue of increasing concern in the region.
Divisional Forest Officer Rupankar K. Marak said the initiative plays a crucial role in equipping forest personnel with updated tools and knowledge to protect biodiversity and manage volatile human-wildlife interfaces.
Sessions were led by a panel of experts, including Bijay Singh Basumatry (WCCB), Dr. Dipankar Lahkar (TRCD), Dr. Jayanta Kumar Roy (HRCD), Dr. Jimmy Borah (LAD), and Hiten Baishya (ERCD), who provided hands-on training and insights into conservation practices and enforcement frameworks.
