Tura, June 2: At a time when education at higher studies level and research remains an aspiration and a difficult pursuit for many young students from remote areas of the country, the successful accomplishment of a scholar from Garo Hills has created a sense of pride and a milestone in the regional community and beyond.
The Gorkha Welfare Society, Garo Hills, felicitated Dr Shraddha Karki Chetry on Monday on successfully completing her doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.), marking her academic feat as not just a moment of joy for her family members but also for the community from Gorkha lineage in the region.
A formal function was held here in Tura where members of the Society along with her well wishers and family members felicitated her for the milestone achievement which involved years of toil, commitment and research which eventually resulted in her being a Ph.D holder. Dr Chetry was awarded with a Doctorate Degree for her thesis on the topic, “Role of Emotional Intelligence in Mindfulness and Subjective Wellbeing of Doctoral Scholars.” It may be recalled that Dr Chetry had conducted research and acquired relevant data on factors affecting the overall mental wellbeing of the researchers while completing her Ph.D., which is a significant contribution to the field of psychology, education and student wellbeing.

Several speakers while congratulating her stated that research of such a magnitude would play an instrumental role at a time when awareness about mental health, stress management and emotional quotient is spreading and are a major topic of discussion in educational institutions across the country.
The Gorkha Welfare Society members also took the opportunity to pay a special tribute to Dr Chetry’s mother Mrs Rekha Karki Chetry, and late father Mr Lakhan Karki Chetry, for their immeasurable sacrifice, encouragement and steadfast support and belief in the scholar which eventually contributed to her success.
Members of the Society felt that academic accomplishments at such a high level required yearlong sacrifices, perseverance and family support, both emotionally and academically. They felt that academic milestones are a stepping stone in shaping an individual, community and thereby the region.
The Gorkha Welfare Society called the academic success a great moment of pride for the entire Gorkha community living in Garo Hills and added that she has set an example to many students from such remote towns that success in research and higher education is possible with sheer hard work and dedication. They also hoped that her success story will encourage young students of Garo Hills to strive towards higher education, research and career growth.
As the felicitation ceremony drew to a close, participants of the event noted that her achievement was indeed symbolic of the changing trend of ambition and aspiration of the young students of Garo Hills and had proved that with right amount of guidance, opportunities and will-power a new era of research and higher education is slowly unfurling in these areas.
