Shillong, Sept 26: The Non-Gazetted Employees Association (NGEA) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) on Friday has decided to temporarily suspend its agitation, which began in July this year.
The protest, which initially started at Gandhi Park, later shifted to the GHADC office premises and intensified when NGEA members, joined by several pressure groups, stormed the council building.
The move to suspend the agitation comes after a September 24 order of the High Court directing the Superintendent of Police to ensure that the GHADC office premises be cleared of agitating employees. Following the directive, the SP of West Garo Hills convened a meeting with GHADC leaders to identify an alternative protest site.
Speaking to Hub News, NGEA president Brithen M. Sangma said, “We had a meeting and came to the conclusion that we will temporarily suspend the agitation and resume work on October 6.”
When asked, Sangma informed that the NGEA would accept the state government’s bailout of 12 months of pending salaries.
Employees confirmed that the GHADC office, which has remained unused for several months, will undergo a cleaning drive before normal functioning resumes.
