SHILLONG, OCT 10: The Hill Farmers’ Union (HFU) on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Minister in-charge Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Timothy D Shira urging the state government to address their 26-point charter of demands.
Additionally, the union has urged the government to link the international markets through the Union which has surplus farmers’ produce like cashew nut, ginger, black pepper, pineapple and jackfruits.
“This international market would greatly help the promotion of farmers’ livelihood and it would encourage other farmers to take interest in farming activities,” HFU said in the letter.
“We trust the Government of Meghalaya and we have a faith that the Charter of Demands raised by the farmers of Garo Hills would be met and implemented successfully for the progress of the farmers,” it added.
The charter of demands aimed at improving the lives and livelihoods of farmers in Garo Hills.
The demands include allocation of funds for conducting surveys and awareness programs on organic farming, setting up of warehouses and cold storage units, launching of potato and onion missions, and provision of incentives for farmers.
The HFU also urged the government to strengthen convergence efforts, implement crop insurance, promote indigenous vegetable and medicinal plants, establishment of farmers’ markets, departmental supply of farming items to farmers and support for fish farmers and animal husbandry.
