Guwahati, July 13: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati held its 27th Convocation on Saturday, awarding degrees to 2,093 students across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. The ceremony was marked by launch of new academic initiatives, and special recognition of top-performing students.
The graduating class included 1,005 undergraduate, 818 postgraduate, and 270 PhD and dual-degree students. Notably, this year saw the first batch of B.Tech. students from the Mehta School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence graduate — a key milestone in the institute’s expansion into cutting-edge fields.
Among the standout performers, Sreehari C., B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering, was awarded the prestigious President of India Gold Medal for securing the highest cumulative performance index.
Abhishek Gautam, B.Tech. in Engineering Physics, received the Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal for excellence in academics, character, and extracurricular achievements.
Souraja Kundu (Electronics and Communication Engineering) and Anubhav (M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering) were honored with the Governor of Assam Gold Medals for UG and PG categories respectively.
Additionally, 16 students received Institute Silver Medals for their outstanding academic performance.
Delivering the convocation address, Dr. Rajendra Singh, D. Houser Banks Professor at Clemson University, urged graduates to align their careers with national impact.

Guest of Honor J. D. Patil, President of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, emphasized innovation and leadership.
“Success is not just about academic brilliance; it’s about doing things differently and making meaningful contributions to a Viksit Bharat,” he said.
In his address, Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal highlighted IIT Guwahati’s continued ascent in global and national rankings
In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, IIT Guwahati announced the launch of a hybrid M.Tech. in Flood and Water Resources Management from August 2025, as well as academic programs such as BS in Biomedical Science and Engineering and BSc (Hons.) in Data Science and AI.
