Shillong, Oct 13: The Social Welfare Department, Government of Meghalaya, celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child 2025 at the Lariti Auditorium, Mawkasiang, under the theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis.” The event highlighted the achievements, resilience, and leadership of girls from across the state.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma attended as the Chief Guest, with Paul Lyngdoh, Adviser to the Social Welfare Department, as Guest of Honour. The programme also saw the presence of Dr. (Mrs.) M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, MLA, senior officials, school heads, partner organisations, and over 500 students from 50 schools.
In his address, the Chief Minister thanked the department for its efforts and called for teamwork to bring lasting social change. He led a two-minute silence to remember children who lost their lives in recent incidents and urged everyone to stay vigilant in protecting young lives.

Highlighting the government’s initiatives, he spoke about reusable sanitary pad units made by self-help groups under the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund, which promote hygiene, sustainability, and women’s livelihood. He also mentioned the Safe Motherhood Programme, which provides care packets for rural mothers and newborns, and stressed the importance of technology and community support in ensuring child safety.
The Chief Minister addressed issues such as drug abuse, announcing improved de-addiction facilities and community vigilance. He encouraged girls to make independent choices and lead with confidence, saying, “Even small decisions can shape your future.”

During the interactive session, students raised issues about school meals, safety, self-defense training, sports, and stress-free learning. The Chief Minister patiently addressed each concern and assured continued government support for their growth and well-being.
Earlier, Pravin Bakshi, Commissioner and Secretary of the Social Welfare Department, opened the event with a message of empowerment, quoting Coco Chanel: “A girl should be two things — who and what she wants.” He highlighted progress through initiatives like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao and commended awareness efforts on menstrual and cyber hygiene.

The event also honoured young achievers in academics, sports, social work, entrepreneurship, and bravery. Motivational talks by Daphisha Kharbani and Paralympian Anjelina Tynhlaiang inspired students to chase their dreams.
