Guwahati, Nov 29: A panel from Jharkhand will soon visit Assam to assess the condition of tea tribes in the state, following a directive from Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
Soren, after being sworn in for a second consecutive term and his fourth overall as chief minister—a first in Jharkhand’s 24-year history—approved the formation of an all-party panel during his first cabinet meeting.
“Tribes from Jharkhand residing in Assam are being marginalised. Many original inhabitants of Jharkhand live there. We have decided to send a panel to study the ground situation and submit a report to the Jharkhand government,” Soren told reporters after the meeting.
The tea tribes, descendants of laborers brought from Jharkhand over a century ago by the British to work in Assam’s tea gardens, have long faced socio-economic challenges. Soren’s move is seen as a strategic response to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s influence in the region.
In September, Soren wrote to Sarma, highlighting the marginalisation of tea tribes from Jharkhand despite their significant contributions to Assam’s economy.
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance recently retained power in Jharkhand, winning 56 of 81 assembly seats, while the BJP-led NDA secured 24 seats.
