Shillong, June 7: The Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) held its Annual General Council Meeting in Shillong on Saturday, bringing renewed focus to the constitutional recognition of the Khasi language, the completion of key literary projects and the celebration of Khasi literary icons.

A major highlight of the session was the Society’s urgent call for the inclusion of Khasi in the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution and the upgradation of its status from an associate official language to a full-fledged official language of Meghalaya. Members reiterated the need for swift government intervention to uphold the linguistic rights and cultural identity of the Khasi people.

The Council also reviewed the progress of the Khasi-to-Khasi and Khasi-to-English dictionary project, a milestone initiative supported by the Department of Arts and Culture, Government of Meghalaya, and the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council. The dictionary aims to strengthen Khasi literature and serve as an academic resource for generations to come.

Plans to commemorate legendary literary figures like Thomas Jones and Soso Tham were also outlined, including the organisation of a National Seminar in New Delhi in 2026 to promote Khasi literature on a wider platform.

The meeting opened with tributes to two late members—Maurice G. Lyngdoh and Bah Darlingstone Dkhar—followed by the presentation of the Annual Report, Financial Report, and the Presidential Address.

A special lecture on “Literature and Literary Criticism” by Dr. D. R. L. Nonglait enriched the scholarly tone of the session.

In the concluding session, elections for the new term were held. The existing leadership was retained with:

The Khasi Authors’ Society reaffirmed its commitment to advancing Khasi language and literature and called on both state and central governments to act decisively on these pending issues.
