KSU urge Govt to prevent illegal immigrants

Shillong, Feb 15: The Khasi Students’ Union South West Khasi Hills has alleged that government and Labour Inspectors are not serious in checking documents of labourers from outside the state and urged the government officials to work diligently ensuring that there is no illegal entry and settlement of outsiders in the state.

In a statement issued here, the organizing secretary of the KSU SWKH Dusterwell K. Lyngdoh said that outsiders who do not possess work permit should be disallowed to work in the district expressing apprehension that illegal immigrants may find their way in the state’s electoral roll.

The union said that it has apprised the government time and again about the situation and the union wanted the Labour Inspectors appointed in Mawkyrwat Block, Mawsynram Block and Ranikor Block to be committed to their duty.

Further, the union said that District Level Team headed by respective Deputy Commissioners and Labour Inspectors to conduct frequent inspection of border areas in Ryngku, Hat Mawdon, Borsora, Nongjri to ensure that influx of illegal immigrants is prevented.

The union has warned contractors or employers to not bring labourers from outside the state if the labourers are not in possession of work permit alleging that most of the labourers who work in the state and the district do not have the necessary documents to proof their identity.

The union has also urged the contractors to employ local labourers for the work which they are familiar with and bring outside labourers for the kind of work which a local is still not equipped to work.

The union urged the traditional heads to be vigilant and keep watch over the entry of outsiders into the villages.

The union also said that the police department should maintain a hawk’s eye through the Infiltration Branch to monitor any illegal entry instead of accusing the members of the union from different units.
