Shillong, Sep 1 : Labour Minister Shakliar Warjri on Monday disclosed that fraudulent documents have been circulating among workers in Meghalaya, sparking grave concerns about lapses in labour regulation.
Warjri said the anomaly was detected during an internal review, where it was found that the papers recovered from certain workers had never been issued by his department. “These were done by someone I don’t know who and they have done something which is very wrong so I have decided and we as a department will file an FIR so whoever is accountable and responsible will be held responsible,” he stated.
He described the discovery as “very wrong” and made it clear that accountability will be fixed through legal action. The Minister further emphasised that the state cannot afford to risk security by allowing such irregularities.
Amid reports of NGOs increasingly taking upon themselves to verify labour licences, Warjri said his department has already begun comprehensive checks across all districts. He announced that inspections will now be a regular exercise, with progress to be reviewed every quarter at his level.
“We will not spare such things because we will not compromise the safety of our state,” he affirmed, underlining that strict oversight will remain the department’s priority.
The revelation comes at a time when public scrutiny over labour monitoring has heightened in Meghalaya, especially with pressure groups stepping up vigilance on the ground.
