Must read

Williamnagar, October 24: Loyola School, one of the most renowned institutions in East Garo Hills, located at Dawagre and run by the Jesuits, celebrated its first-ever Cultural Day with great enthusiasm and participation from students, teachers, and parents.

The event, held in the school premises, was a vibrant showcase of music, dance, food, attire, and customs representing the rich cultural diversity of the region. Students and teachers came dressed in traditional costumes and presented performances highlighting the heritage of different tribes and communities of India.

Indigenous games and traditional food stalls added a lively charm to the celebration, drawing much appreciation from visitors and guests.

The Cultural Day programme was graced by Mr. Alphonsush R. Marak, MDC of Williamnagar, as the Chief Guest, alongside other dignitaries, local leaders, and parents.

In his address, Mr. Marak lauded the school’s efforts in promoting cultural awareness and unity among students, encouraging them to take pride in their roots and traditions. He highlighted the uniqueness of the matrilineal system practiced by the Garo people and reminded students and the gathering to uphold the values and principles laid down by their forefathers.

Drawing from Garo folklore, he cited the story of Asi and Malja as an example. He explained that “Asi-Malja” is a cautionary folklore emphasizing the importance of respecting and listening to one’s elders. According to the belief, Asi and Malja were two individuals cursed by their gods for their disobedience, leading to tragic consequences. Over time, the phrase “Asi-Malja” has become a common expression used to warn both children and adults about the repercussions of ignoring traditional wisdom and advice.

Mr. Marak further urged the gathering that, while it is essential to abide by the laws of the land, it is equally important to preserve and practice the customary laws and cultural values of the Garo community to keep them alive for future generations.

Speaking exclusively to Hub News after the programme, Mr. Marak expressed his gratitude to Fr. Victor D’Mello, the Principal of the school, for inviting him to such a vibrant celebration. He shared his happiness on seeing students dressed in traditional attire, showcasing the beauty of Garo culture. He also advised the youth of Garo Hills to follow the customary laws of their ancestors and work towards reviving them in modern times.

In his remarks, Fr. Victor D’Mello stated that the main objective of organizing the Cultural Day was to remind students of the importance of preserving their identity and cultural heritage in an era dominated by modern technology and changing lifestyles. He noted that many traditional dances, customs, and even languages are gradually being forgotten, and such programmes aim to rekindle that cultural pride. He expressed satisfaction that, despite it being the first-ever Cultural Day celebration, it was a grand success.

Parents present at the event also shared their happiness, expressing that such programmes will help their children understand, respect, and value their own culture and traditions.
