Aizawl, May 27: In one of the biggest drug seizures in recent weeks, a joint operation by the Mizoram Excise & Narcotics Department and the Central Anti-Drugs Squad (CADS) of the Central Young Mizo Association led to the recovery of nearly 3 kilograms of heroin and close to 10 kilograms of methamphetamine over two days in Aizawl.
The operation began on Sunday with the arrest of two individuals—C. Lalramnunmawii (37) of Chanmari West and Lalnunmawia (35) of Tuikual North—were found in possession of 549 grams of heroin.
Acting swiftly on leads from the initial arrest, the team conducted a follow-up raid on Monday at the Luangmual Industrial Complex in Aizawl, where they seized an additional 1.549 kilograms of heroin and 9.817 kilograms of methamphetamine. Authorities also confiscated a TATA Yodha truck (Regn No. MZ01 AB-4110) allegedly used for transporting the drugs, along with two mobile phones.
The total haul from the two-day crackdown amounts to 2.98 kgs of heroin and 9.817 kgs of methamphetamine. Both accused have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and were presented before the Special Court (NDPS Act), Aizawl District on Monday.
Significant Year-to-Date Seizures
The department also released cumulative figures of contraband seized between January and May 26 this year, highlighting the scale of narcotics trafficking in the region:
Heroin: 26.415 kgs
Methamphetamine: 67.179 kgs
Crystal Meth: 48.061 kgs
Ganja: 132.983 kgs
Opium: 945 grams
Cough Syrup: 1,748 phials
Alprazolam: 23,572 tablets
Tramadol: 2,033 tablets
The department reiterated its commitment to cracking down on drug trafficking and commended the collaboration with civil society groups like CADS, which have become instrumental in the state’s anti-drug efforts.
