Itanagar, Oct 3: A 32-year-old man from Bihar slipped into a deep gorge at the Siang-Yamne river confluence near Pongging viewpoint in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district on Thursday, prompting an intensive search operation.
The missing man has been identified as Uma Shankar, a resident of Naser Post Gurua village under Gurua sub-division in Gaya, Bihar. Shankar was working as a Contractual Assistant Manager with India Post Payment Bank at Dhemaji Post Office in Assam.
According to reports, Shankar had travelled to East Siang with three friends — Kushantadip Baruah from Dhemaji (Assam), Anup Kumar from West Champaran (Bihar), and Subodh Kumar from Muzaffarpur (Bihar).
The group reached Pongging viewpoint around 1.15 pm after obtaining tourist permits at the Ruksin gate. While the others were parking their vehicle, Shankar reportedly walked towards the cliff’s edge, where a few tourists had gathered to view the river confluence.
“When we reached the cliff, we couldn’t see him. Some youths nearby told us that a man had slipped off,” Anup Kumar, one of Shankar’s friends, told reporters.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) launched an operation soon after the incident was reported. Despite extensive efforts, including rappelling attempts and drone surveillance, search teams were unable to trace Shankar before nightfall.
His friends have appealed to residents of Pongging and nearby villages to assist in the ongoing search.
