Imphal, May 9: An abducted Tangkhul Naga woman was safely rescued and released on Saturday following sustained negotiations and coordinated efforts by the Assam Rifles in Manipur’s Kamjong district.
The woman has been identified as Olina Ningshen. According to sources, she was allegedly abducted from Kangpat village after violence erupted in parts of Kamjong district earlier this week.
Officials said she was released by KNB (B) and Village Volunteers Eastern Zone at Z Choro village.
“Due to the persistent efforts and negotiations of the Assam Rifles, the woman, who was held captive by KNB(B) and Village Volunteers Eastern Zone, was released safely,” an official said.
He added that the woman’s husband, village headman and members of civil society organisations (CSOs) were taken to Humine Police Station near the handover location after security forces secured her release.
“Following the release, the family and CSOs were taken to the Assam Rifles unit headquarters at Chassad for formal handover procedures and documentation,” the official said.
According to the Assam Rifles, the family, village headman and CSO representatives later returned safely to Khangpat village. Authorities also ensured medical check-ups and psychological assistance during the entire process.
“In the early hours of May 7, unrest was reported near Z Choro and opposite Namlee along the India-Myanmar border. The volatile situation was brought under control by Assam Rifles troops through an immediate response despite challenging conditions,” an Assam Rifles statement said.
Acting swiftly, the force deployed multiple rescue teams and secured 10 houses affected by the violence. Civilians were evacuated to safer locations, while 15 distressed villagers, including women and children, were rescued and provided humanitarian assistance at the Aloyo Assam Rifles camp.
“A woman was also provided immediate first aid and medical evacuation support,” the statement added.
The Assam Rifles simultaneously launched sanitisation and search operations to prevent further escalation and restore stability in the region.
During the operations, one armed cadre of KNA-B, identified as Lal Thag John (38), was apprehended from Churachandpur along with a weapon, magazine and ammunition. He was later handed over to the local police.
