Imphal, March 31: Four truck drivers from Assam were looted after they were assaulted near an oil pump in Manipur’s Imphal West district on Wednesday night. According to sources, the drivers were transporting essential commodities to Imphal for feeding poor masses of the state.

Police said five self-styled local thugs have looted five mobile handsets from the four drivers after thrashing them severely on Wednesday night. The incident came to light when Saikhom Babudhon, president of the Manipur Drivers’ Association (MDA) complained to the Patsoi police station on Thursday.

“While they were resting and trying to take night meals at around 10 pm on Wednesday, five unknown miscreants identified themselves as local thugs beat them, and looted their mobile phones near Moidangpok Korouhanba Oil pump parking under the Patsoi police station,” Babudhon said.

One of the truck drivers Md Islam said that he along with three other drivers were taking meals when suddenly the people arrived and threw their meals, and started beating them for no reason.

General Secretary of the MDA, Sanjoy Thokchom appealed to the people of the state not to harass drivers, especially those whose heavy vehicles are inter-state plying.

“We have started investigation and very soon the culprits will be arrested,” said a police official.
