Imphal, June 14: The Manipur government on Friday restored mobile internet and data services in five Valley districts following an improvement in the law and order situation.
The five Imphal valley districts are Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching.
In an official order, Commissioner (Home) N. Ashok Kumar stated that, after the overall improvement in law and order in the five districts and the inconvenience faced by the public during the suspension of internet services, the state government has decided to lift all forms of internet suspension in these areas.
The suspension was initially imposed after violent protests broke out on the night of June 7, following the arrest of Arambai Tenggol leader Ashem Kanan Singh (46), affiliated with the Meitei radical outfit, by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In response, the state government banned mobile internet and data services from midnight of June 7 for five days and imposed an indefinite curfew in the five Imphal Valley districts, predominantly inhabited by the Meitei community.
On June 10, the district administration relaxed the curfew from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A large contingent of Central and state security forces, led by senior officials, was deployed—particularly in Imphal East and Imphal West—to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, Arambai Tenggol also announced on June 10 that it had relaxed its 10-day Manipur shutdown call, which began on June 8.
The group had launched the protest in response to the arrest of its senior leader and the registration of cases by security agencies.
