Imphal, Aug 30: A young soldier from Manipur lost his life after being swept away by the swollen Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir on the night of August 28.

The soldier has been identified as Jimmy Ngamminlun Mate, son of Holkhothang Mate of Sahumphai, Manipur, who was serving in the 5th Assam Regiment.

According to officials, after the sudden outburst of the Chenab River, Jimmy’s unit was forced to abandon its post when it was overrun by floodwaters. “In the chaos of darkness, Jimmy was caught in the raging current and went missing. After nearly 24 hours of search operations, his lifeless body was recovered on August 29 at around 3 pm,” a police official said.

Jimmy’s story reflects a double tragedy. While he served the nation on the frontline, his parents and siblings have been surviving as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at NS Khojamphai Village in Churachandpur, after being displaced by the ongoing conflict in Manipur.

His life, marked by both displacement and duty, ended in a tragedy that underscores the compounded suffering of Manipur’s conflict-hit communities.

Jimmy will be remembered in the hearts of the people of Manipur for his sacrifice and undaunted spirit.
