Following the incident, the authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the firing and bring those responsible to justice.

Also, after the firing incident started, a crowd gathered in the area, and Meitei women vigilantes, popularly known as Meira Paibis, started blocking the road.

This comes two days after a heated confrontation between a mob and security forces at the border of Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts in which dozens of people were injured.

A day before the protest, a full curfew was imposed in all the five valley districts of Manipur as a preventive measure.

So far, more than 160 people have lost their lives and several hundreds have been left injured since ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3.

The violence broke out when a “Tribal Solidarity March” was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
