Imphal, June 6: In a joint operation, security forces intercepted a major consignment of suspected Guwahati-bound brown sugar worth approximately ₹17 crore.

Two alleged drug smugglers were arrested in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district during the operation, which was carried out by the Narcotics Unit of Manipur Police and the Assam Rifles.

The arrested individuals have been identified as M. Ngaiyu Vekhe and A. Dahnii Abraham, both residents of Thingba Khullen in Senapati district.

Acting on specific intelligence, the joint team intercepted a four-wheeler (Creta car) near Daili Village along NH-102, under the jurisdiction of Kangpokpi police station.

Upon searching the vehicle, the team recovered 75 soap cases containing suspected brown sugar, believed to be of Myanmar origin. The narcotics, weighing 2.88 kg (including the soap cases and transparent polythene wrappers), were concealed inside both rear doors of the vehicle.

Officials estimate the seized contraband’s value at around ₹17 crore in the international illicit market.

“A case has been registered under the NDPS Act, 1985, and interrogation has begun. The accused revealed that they were supposed to deliver the contraband in Guwahati,” a police official said.
