MDC Rinaldo Sangma ask Ex-MLA Mominin to respect Garo sentiment

Must read

Shillong, Mar 2:  The statement by former MLA Estamur Mominin questioning the necessity of ST certificate for nominations and elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) has triggered a formal response from GHADC MDC Rinaldo K. Sangma.

In a press release dated 1st March 2026, Sangma emphasized that the GHADC, established under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, aims to protect the distinct identity, customary laws, land, and resources of the Garo tribal community from non‑tribal interests and prevent political or economic marginalization of tribal populations.

Sangma urged Mominin, also a former representative, to understand that the Sixth Schedule’s provisions for autonomous district councils are instruments of tribal self‑governance and are both constitutionally and morally intended to reserve representation in the GHADC exclusively for the Garo people, safeguarding their rights.

The statement asks Mominin to refrain from commenting on or interfering with GHADC or upcoming MDC elections, which are meant solely for the protection and representation of the Garo community.

Sangma called for respect for the spirit of the Sixth Schedule and solidarity with the Garo people in defending their customary institutions and ancestral homeland.
