Meghalaya Assembly Polls: 3 major clashes between NPP and TMC supporters so far, close to 200 people arrested

Shillong, Feb 21: The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Meghalaya, F. R Kharkongor on Tuesday informed that there have been several instances of clash between different party’s supporters amidst the election fever.

Kharkongor informed that in the Phulbari case there were two incidents. In the first incident, 124 people were rounded and section 107 CrPc was bound and then it was followed up by the arrest of about 25 people. In the second incident, cases have been registered and two FIRs have been filed, he said adding that the situation is presently under control.

He also gave an update on the incident in West Shillong Constituency where supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the supporters of the National People’s Party (NPP) clashed at the residence of the candidate. He said, “The case is under investigation, but in the first case, 50 people who were arrested, 15 were from NPP and 16 were from TMC. The second case is under investigation. I cannot say who is responsible so let the investigation be complete then we’ll get the full and final picture.”

He, however, assured that the situation is under control and proper checking is going on in the State.
