Tura, Dec 4: Festive air grips the historic St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School in Tura as the school celebrated Platinum Jubilee celebration (1950-2025) on Thursday at school ground.
A platinum jubilee Souvenir was released during the programme.
The event was graced by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma, as the Chief Guest, along with the Bishop of Tura Diocese, Rt. Rev Andrew R Marak; Sr. Marline Pinto, MCJ and Sr. Maria D’Silva, MCJ, Regional Directoress.
Conrad announced to sanction a new school bus from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund, and offered to provide music instruments to the school, highlighting his personal belief that music is a great unifier and a crucial tool for brain development.
He encouraged the principal to submit a formal request for the same, a decision met with great cheer from the students.
The Chief Minister praised the school for producing outstanding alumni who contribute globally and locally, and provided a substantial support of a school bus and musical instruments to the school.
Drawing inspiration from the life of a missionary, Sister Camino, the CM emphasized the importance of finding a larger purpose in life and serving others.
He stressed that the government’s efforts are focused on providing the right guidance, opportunities, and motivation to transform the young population into a positive force for the state.
Addressing the systemic challenges in the state’s education sector, the Chief Minister underscored the government’s commitment to structural reforms and prioritizing quality over quantity in education spending. He mentioned the ongoing difficult process of rationalizing schools and teachers to improve the overall quality of institutions across the state.
The CM also announced a key cultural reform, mentioning the urgency of making the teaching of Khasi and Garo languages mandatory for students across the state in the foundational years, a policy he plans to formalize in an upcoming cabinet meeting.
Conrad concluded by sharing his long term vision for the state, saying that true development lies in shifting the mindset of governance from merely providing infrastructure to creating profound social impact through investment in human capital.
The souvenir meticulously chronicles the school’s journey, and features tributes and memories from distinguished alumni, former staff, and long-time patrons. The Platinum Jubilee Souvenir release officially brings the year-long 75th-anniversary festivities to a close, cementing the legacy of St. Xavier’s as a beacon of learning and character building in West Garo Hills.
