Tura, Jan 11: The town of Tura is hosting the fifth edition of Meghalaya Games, the biggest sporting event of the state, for the first time as the latest edition of the Games is historic for various reasons. The first of all is that the event is being held for the first time out of Shillong and the second is that President of India Droupadi Murmu will be inaugurating the games in person on January 15.

Tura, a small town in Garo Hills, with less than 1 lakh population and limited amenities, is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the event is conducted smoothly and also leave a lasting impression of the attendees and participating athletes. It is currently hosting over 3000 athletes and officials, a herculean task for town which is yet to host any major event to date.

The town is all decked up for the much-awaited event, which will be etched and remembered as a ‘historic event’ not just for the obvious reasons stated above but as the heralding an era for the town as a destination for mega events, catapulting it on a path of rapid development and progress.

As of Thursday evening (January 11, 2024). The town is hosting 2337 athletes, 228 coaches and managers, in addition to Chef de Mission, Asst Chef de Mission, president and secretaries of various sporting associations, totalling 3136 officials and participants related to the event. In the coming days, the number will go higher as more visiting officials, media contingents, security personnel come in to ensure that the event is colourful and successful. The town is accommodating all of them in schools, hostels and guest houses.

The town is more than happy to host the event and the visitors as it seems its festive season has been extended. The sporting vibe in the town is already quite palpable with the town wears branding of different sports disciplines.

But many do wonder, where these events are being hosted. Many have not even heard of the Tura Track and Field Stadium, which has been prepared for the different events.
