SHILLONG, MAR 26: Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar on Wednesday chaired a meeting with officials from various educational institutions in Shillong to discuss ways to revitalize the educational status in the state.
The meeting, attended by officials from prominent institutions such as NEHU, Captain Williamson Sangma State University, and NIT, among others, focused on implementing the actionable recommendations from the Conference of Governors held in August 2024.
“We need to enhance academic excellence through quality education, innovation in teaching methodologies, and strengthening research ecosystems,” Vijayashankar said.

“Institutions must focus on outcome-based learning for students and create a holistic approach towards improving the quality, relevance, and inclusiveness of higher education.”
The meeting deliberated on several key areas, including improving accreditation and assessment mechanisms, addressing faculty shortages, and implementing the National Education Policy.
The Governor emphasized the need for transparency and timeliness in appointments within universities and urged institutions to prioritize student welfare and campus development.
Expressing concern over substance abuse among youth, the Governor called for decisive measures to create drug-free campuses.
“We must take sustained efforts to create awareness, provide counselling support, and implement strict monitoring mechanisms,” he said.
The Governor also stressed the importance of environmental consciousness, urging institutions to undertake tree plantation drives within their campuses.
“Educational institutions play a pivotal role in nation-building and must strive to create not only academically proficient but also socially responsible and environmentally conscious citizens,” he added.
Officials present in the meeting assured their commitment to implementing the recommendations in a time-bound and effective manner.
