Shillong, Jul 7: The Meghalaya High Court on Monday directed the State government to submit data on cases registered under the NDPS Act in and around Police Bazar area after a PIL highlighted large-scale drug peddling in the locality.
The order was passed by the division bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W Diengdoh after hearing MC(PIL) filed by Mewaker Lyngdoh vs Union of India & Others.
During the hearing, K Khan, Additional Advocate General, tendered an affidavit-in-reply on behalf of the State of Meghalaya pursuant to the Court’s order dated June 8, 2026.
The affidavit dated July 6, 2026 was taken on record and a copy was served to Mr S.P. Mahanta, Senior Counsel appearing for the petitioner.

The affidavit details steps taken by the State and provides information on cases registered between January 1, 2025 and March 31, 2026.
It also mentions the disposal of contraband handed over by various authorities to the State Police. The details are given in a chart at paragraph 4 of the affidavit.
SP Mahanta submitted that drug peddling activities are continuing on a large scale in and around the Police Bazar area and that the same needs to be curbed.
Seeking more time, Khan requested the Court to allow him to furnish data on NDPS cases registered from January 2026 till date specifically in and around Police Bazar area.
Allowing the request, the bench posted the matter to August 3, 2026 for filing of an additional affidavit with the said data.
