Meghalaya police coordinated operation leads to rescue of hostage and arrest of kidnappers

Tura, Feb 23: A joint coordinated operation led by West Garo Hills police, with support from Ri-Bhoi and Jaintia Hills, has led to the rescue of a kidnapped hostage and numerous arrests in a single day.

West Garo Hills Police received Information on Tuesday morning from the wife of one Pawan Ray that on Monday evening he had proceeded to Bongaigaon along with the driver in a Kia saltos vehicle, but at around 2:39 AM Tuesday morning she received info from the driver that her husband has been abducted by some unknown armed miscreants, near Goalpara at an unknown destination along with the vehicle leaving the driver.

“Today early morning she received a call from her husband’s phone, demanding ransom money for his release. Upon receipt of credible inputs that the vehicle was seen near Shillong Bypass, and the abducted victim spotted near Bamondonga Paham, under Bogularbita OP, We immediately formed a special operation team headed SDPO Dadenggre, comprising of Phulbari and Tikrikilla Police Stations who conducted search and rescue operation near Gaptuli Reserve Forest area, Bamondonga areas. During operations, Pawan Ray was rescued and one of the abduction gang members Md Raju Ali of Nolbari Assam was arrested. The abductors left the crime scene after seeing the approaching Police team,” said Dr. MGR Kumar, SP of West Garo Hills while briefing media persons about the successful rescue operation.

He further revealed that the vehicle taken away during the abduction was recovered by Ri-Bhoi Police and a gang member arrested, while two more gang members driving to Jaintia Hills in a Mahindra pick up involved in the abduction were picked up by Jowai Police, based on inputs by West Garo Hills Police.

A case has been registered in Tikrikilla PS upon the receipt of FIR submitted by SDPO Dadenggre and further investigation and operations continue to nab remaining gang members who are suspected to have weapons with them.

“All gang members are from Assam, and had planned to keep the victim in Gaptuli reserve forest area with the help of a local harborer who is known to them, after abduction from Goalpara,” said SP MGR Kumar.
