Shillong, May 30: Meghalaya will host the National Games in 2027 and is looking to strengthen the state’s sporting ecosystem as it prepares for one of the biggest sporting events in the country.
Meghalaya officially sealed its candidature for the National Games 2027 on Saturday, signing the Host State Agreement and inaugurating a new Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Hall in Shillong. The twin events highlighted the state’s vision of expanding sports infrastructure and nurturing athletic talent.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Union Minister of State for Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla and Indian Olympic Association president Dr. P. T. Usha.
Calling it a landmark moment for the state, Sangma said hosting the National Games reflected Meghalaya’s long-term vision of emerging as a leading sporting destination and taking centre stage on India’s sporting map. He expressed confidence that the event would bring investment, opportunities and greater exposure for athletes from the state.

Mandaviya reiterated the Centre’s commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure across the Northeast and nurturing young talent, noting the region’s growing contribution to Indian sports through athletes competing across disciplines.
The newly inaugurated Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Hall is expected to serve as one of the key venues for the 2027 National Games and provide year-round training facilities for athletes from Meghalaya and across the Northeast.
For Meghalaya, the signing of the agreement was more than a formal administrative exercise. It marked the beginning of a two-year countdown to the biggest multi-sport event ever hosted by the state, placing Meghalaya at the centre of India’s sporting calendar in 2027.
Officials at the event described the occasion as the beginning of a larger sporting journey for the state.
“Today marks the beginning of a sporting ecosystem that will inspire future generations,” they said.
