Shillong, Jan 31: Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma on Tuesday informed that three Common University Entrance Test (CUET) centres will soon be set up in Meghalaya – one in Tura and two in Shillong.

Speaking to reporters, Sangma said, “Just to inform everybody that day before yesterday I had a phone call with the DG of National Testing Agency (NTA), New Delhi (who) informed me that for the post graduate course, three CUET centres will be set up for Meghalaya – one for Tura and two in Shillong.”

“However, based on the number of students’ enrolment, they may open up more centres in the state,” he added.

His statement came in the wake of the repeated allegation made by the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) that the state government is doing nothing to resolve the issues faced by students appearing for the CUET examination.

Sangma also asked the VPP to come and meet him so that he can brief them well on the status of the matter.

He however said it is the government’s responsibility and the education department is working all out to resolve the students’ issue.

On the other hand, the Education Minister expressed concern over the poor performance of students from Meghalaya in the CUET as well as other examinations.

He went on to say that the Vice-Chancellor of NEHU informed him that numerous seats remained unoccupied last year due to a lack of qualified candidates in the CUET examination.

He thereby urged students to diligently prepare for such entrance examinations.

“The underlying issue is our lack of thorough preparation, as our students tend to approach it casually. However, if we take it seriously, cracking the examination is entirely feasible and quite straightforward,” he said.

Sangma said if needed, the government may decide to come up with coaching centres but at present, the existing institutions have enough potential to prepare students for such examinations.
