Shillong, June 12: As infrastructure development accelerates across Meghalaya and the wider Northeast, 26 young people from villages in West Jaintia Hills district have completed a week-long training programme in welding and metal fabrication, equipping them with skills that are increasingly in demand across the construction, engineering and manufacturing sectors.
The seven-day Skill Upgradation Programme on Welding and Metal Fabrication Techniques, organised by the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Community College (DDUCC) for Skill Development at Wahiajer, concluded on Friday with participants receiving hands-on training designed to improve employability and create livelihood opportunities.

Held from June 5 to 12 under the aegis of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), the programme brought together youths from different villages and combined classroom instruction with practical demonstrations conducted by technical experts.
Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. F. R. Sumer, Principal-in-Charge of DDUCC, underscored the importance of fabrication skills in supporting infrastructure development while also contributing to climate-resilient growth.
Linking the programme with the observance of World Environment Day 2026, he stressed the need for the manufacturing and engineering sectors to adopt greener fabrication techniques and reduce their carbon footprint. He urged participants to embrace sustainable practices and support the transition toward environmentally responsible infrastructure development.
At the valedictory function, officials and industry representatives highlighted the growing demand for skilled welders and fabricators across both public and private sectors. They encouraged participants to view welding as a viable career path, citing strong employment prospects, entrepreneurship opportunities and the region’s expanding infrastructure requirements.

Organisers said the initiative forms part of DDUCC’s broader efforts to promote vocational education and skill development in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, while helping rural youth acquire industry-relevant skills.
The programme concluded with the distribution of certificates and renewed calls for more community-based technical training initiatives to bridge the gap between local talent and the workforce needs of a rapidly developing region.
