Shillong, June 14: A seven-member contingent of Meghalaya’s rising kickboxing talents has left for Indore, Madhya Pradesh, to participate in the Sub-Junior National Kickboxing Championship scheduled from June 17 to 21, carrying the hopes of the state and showcasing the growing strength of grassroots sports in Meghalaya.
The team, comprising four girls and three boys aged between 8 and 14 years, will represent Meghalaya in various categories of Kick Light, Light Contact, Low Kick and Point Fighting events.
Among the athletes is ranking kickboxer Dajied Kyrpang Synjri of Laitkor Rngi, who will compete in the Kick Light and Low Kick below-48 kg categories. Sisters Zyarra Kharkongor and Bashanpaia Kharkongor from Laitkor Nongdaneng will participate in the Light Contact below-38 kg and Kick Light below-40 kg events respectively.
One of the youngest members of the team is eight-year-old Heilina Sad from Laitkor Mawrie, who will compete in the Light Contact below-42 kg and Point Fighting below-28 kg categories.
Abigail Ridamaka L. Pyngrope and Ribhadaker Bina from Mawlyngad, Jowai Road, will also represent the state in Kick Light and Light Contact events.
The athletes received a warm send-off at Hotel Assembly, Police Bazar, Shillong, where officials of the Meghalaya State Kickboxing Association, coaches, parents and well-wishers gathered to encourage the young sportspersons ahead of the national championship.
Co-Adviser of the Meghalaya State Kickboxing Association, Shaiborlang Lyngdoh Mawphlang, thanked the management of St. Francis De Sales Secondary School, Laitkor, for supporting the athletes and allowing them to appear for their examinations after returning from the championship.
He noted that national-level tournaments provide young athletes with valuable exposure and opportunities to earn rankings that could eventually pave the way for international representation.
Association officials also appealed to parents and educational institutions to continue supporting student-athletes who balance academics with competitive sports.
The association acknowledged the efforts of licensed coach Babit Kharsahnoh, school coaches and World No. 10-ranked international kickboxer and martial artist Felicia K. Synjri for mentoring the young athletes.
The team will be guided in Indore by international kickboxer Daniella I.W. Mylliemngap, who will serve as team coach during the championship.
With a blend of youthful enthusiasm, talent and determination, Meghalaya’s young kickboxers will now look to make their mark on the national stage and bring laurels back home.
