During his two-day visit, the Prime Minister is set to inaugurate, launch and lay the foundation stone for projects worth over ₹4,000 crore—signalling a major development push in the Himalayan state.
Modi arrived earlier at the Libing Army Helipad, where he was received by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and Governor Om Prakash Mathur. He was later joined in the roadshow by Tamang and state BJP president D.R. Thapa.
Crowds lined the capital’s roads hours in advance, waving national flags and cheering as the Prime Minister’s convoy moved through the city. Residents from across Sikkim—cutting across age groups and backgrounds—turned out in large numbers, underscoring the significance of the golden jubilee celebrations.
Calling the welcome “grand and resounding,” Tamang, popularly known as Golay, said in a post on X that the turnout reflected the “deep respect and warm affection” the people of Sikkim hold for Modi’s leadership. “It was indeed an honour to join him during the roadshow and witness the overwhelming love and support firsthand,” he wrote.

The visit carries both political and ceremonial significance, with Modi scheduled to take part in key events marking five decades since Sikkim became a full-fledged Indian state in 1975.
As part of the development push, projects aimed at river pollution abatement in Singtam and Gangtok will be launched, focusing on improving urban sanitation and river health. Officials said the scale and diversity of the projects reflect a “holistic development roadmap” balancing infrastructure growth with ecological sustainability.
The visit is being seen as a key milestone in Sikkim’s golden jubilee year and a signal of continued focus on the Northeast as a priority in India’s development agenda.
On Tuesday, the Prime Minister is expected to visit Gangtok’s Orchidarium, where the newly developed Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari Park—a world-class orchid experience centre—will showcase the state’s rich ecological and floral heritage.
