Muslims in Shillong observe Muharram with ‘Sahid Karbala Smaran’ procession

Must read

Shillong, July 29: ‘Sahid Karbala Smaran’ procession was carried out through various parts of Shillong on Saturday to mark Muharram. Muharram marks the commencement of the Islamic New Year and holds immense religious importance for the Muslim community.

Considered the second holiest month in Islam after Ramadan, Muharram is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Quran, alongside Rajab, Dhu al-Qi’ dah, and Dhu al-Hijjah. The name “Muharram” translates to “forbidden”, signifying its sanctity and prompting many Muslims to engage in prayer, reflection, and fasting during this period.

The heart of Muharram’s significance lies in its remembrance of the Battle of Karbala, a momentous event in Islamic history. This battle resulted in the martyrdom of Imam Hussain Ibn Ali, the beloved grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, holds particular reverence as it marks the anniversary of this tragic event.

Fourteen centuries ago, on the fateful day of Ashura, Imam Hussain and his young son faced brutal martyrdom at the hands of a tyrant ruler during the Battle of Karbala. The aftermath of the battle was deeply distressing for his family as the surviving members were subjected to imprisonment and harsh treatment.

During Muharram, Muslims around the world reflect on the profound sacrifice made by Imam Hussain and his followers, exemplifying principles of justice, righteousness, and resistance against oppression. Many choose to fast on Ashura as an act of remembrance and solidarity.
