Nagaland University develops nature-inspired technology to recover resources from wastewater

Must read

Guwahati, May 19: Researchers at Nagaland University have created a new eco-friendly technology that turns wastewater into valuable resources like clean water, nutrients, biofuels, and biogas. Inspired by nature, this method uses plants, algae, and microbes.

Led by Prof. Prabhakar Sharma to treat wastewater while recovering useful materials., Head of the Department of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, the research promotes bio-based soft technologies — systems that work with natural processes to clean water and reuse waste. These systems are energy-efficient, low-cost, and ideal for use in rural and small-town areas.

“Instead of seeing wastewater as a problem, we’re treating it as a source of valuable resources,” said Prof. Sharma. “This approach helps reduce pollution, supports sustainable farming, and fits well with India’s goals for a cleaner and greener future.”

The research combines different natural methods — such as algae systems, microbial fuel cells, and artificial wetlands — to improve efficiency. It also looks at how to remove newer pollutants like microplastics.

The findings were published in the international journal Current Opinion in Environmental Science & Health.

Prof. Jagadish K. Patnaik, Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University, said, “Traditional wastewater treatment removes pollution but often wastes useful materials. This research shows how we can recover those resources and reduce waste at the same time.”

Currently, the technology has been tested in labs. The next step is to try it out in real settings by working with local communities and industries. The team plans to set up small treatment units, study their long-term performance, and make them affordable and easy to use.
