NCW Chief Rekha Sharma to be in Shillong to promote entrepreneurship among indigenous women

Shillong, July 6: Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), Rekha Sharma, along with a high-level delegation, will be in Shillong city from the July 7 – 9 to participate in a workshop and regional conference on promoting entrepreneurship among indigenous women based on non-timber forest produce.

The event, organised in collaboration with the Meghalaya Biodiversity Board, will take place at the State Convention Centre on July 8-9.

The first day, July 8th, will see the attendance of about 200 rural women entrepreneurs, cultivators, self-help group (SHG) members, and traditional medicinal plant growers.

On July 9th, the event will bring together officials and stakeholders, including academic scholars and industry practitioners. Sessions will cover market dynamics, technology adoption, value chain challenges, and income augmentation. The conference aims to develop actionable plans and strategies for fostering sustainable economic development through NTFP-based entrepreneurship.

The workshop will focus on enhancing business operations and market reach through market integration and technology adoption, identifying bottlenecks and creating action plans to overcome value chain challenges, improving efficiency and profitability, generating innovative ideas for diversifying income streams, and promoting economic resilience and sustainability. Additionally, it will foster a collaborative environment for promoting NTFP-based entrepreneurship among indigenous women in the North Eastern Region (NER).

In conjunction with this event, the Governor of Meghalaya has declared the following officials from the National Commission for Women as state guests from July 7 to 10, 2024: Rekha Sharma, Chairperson, NCW, New Delhi; Delina Khongdup, Member, NCW, New Delhi; Mamta Kumari, Member, NCW, New Delhi; and Meenakshi Negi, IFS, Member Secretary, NCW, New Delhi. This notification was issued by the Joint Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Forest & Environment Department.
