Guwahati, June 12: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior professor and Dean of the School of Life Sciences at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹3.43 lakh. A private contractor from Guwahati has also been arrested in the case.

The arrests were made during a CBI-led trap operation at the Guwahati University Guest House on Tuesday, where the bribe money was allegedly being handed over. The second accused has been identified as Pranjal Sharma, a resident of Bishnu Rabha Path in Beltola, Guwahati, and proprietor of a supply firm.

The CBI registered a case on June 11 based on credible information that Sharma, in collusion with Dr. Nirmalendu Saha, Professor of Zoology and Dean at NEHU, and others, was engaged in corrupt practices. The professor allegedly received bribes in exchange for awarding supply orders of scientific equipment, laboratory items, and for the clearance of related bills.

According to the CBI, both accused were caught red-handed during the transaction. They will be produced before the competent court in Guwahati today.

Searches were conducted at two locations, leading to the recovery of incriminating documents. A third location is currently being searched as part of the ongoing investigation.
