Tura, Sept 20: Students of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Tura Campus came together to pay heartfelt homage to legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away on September 16 in Singapore while attending the NorthEast Festival.

Around 35 students from Assam, other northeastern states, gathered near the Garo Department Building to honour the late icon on September 19.

Holding posters, lighting candles, and observing a minute’s silence, they expressed their collective grief over the loss of a voice that had defined an era of music in the region. Even local Garo students joined the gathering, reflecting how deeply Zubeen’s music touched lives beyond linguistic and cultural boundaries.

The singer was born in Tura.

“We cannot believe that he is no more. I grew up listening to his songs, and it is very sad for me. It’s hard to accept that this has happened,” said Bhargavi Saikia, a Master’s student in Food Technology from Nagaon.

Her classmate Sweety Das echoed the sentiment: “We have known Zubeen da since we understood what music is. My last wish is that his soul finds eternal peace.”

For Pranjal Singh of Gohpur, Assam, the grief was beyond words: “We have lost a gem, not only from Assam but from the entire Northeast. The whole region is in deep shock right now.”

The candlelight gathering reflected the anguish of fans across the Northeast, where Zubeen was more than just a singer—he was a cultural force and a unifying voice.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway in Guwahati to receive his mortal remains, expected to arrive from Singapore on Saturday. The body will be kept at Sarusajai Stadium for public viewing, where thousands are expected to pay their final respects.

Known for his versatility—singing in over 40 languages—as well as his philanthropy and activism, Zubeen Garg’s sudden demise has left an irreplaceable void in the cultural fabric of Assam and the Northeast.
