Government unveils ambitious Airport City to power investment, create jobs and shape Assam’s next phase of growth

Guwahati , July 10: Assam has unveiled one of its most ambitious urban development proposals yet, with plans to establish an Airport City around the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, an undertaking designed to position Guwahati as a major economic hub and redefine the state’s growth story.

Presenting the Budget, Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah announced what could become Assam’s biggest urban dream yet, saying the proposed Aerotropolis will emerge as a modern satellite city with world-class infrastructure, industrial and commercial districts, and modern social amenities aimed at attracting investment and generating large-scale employment.

Drawing parallels with Noida in Uttar Pradesh, Gurugram in Haryana and New Town Kolkata in West Bengal, the government said Assam now needs a similar urban growth centre to unlock its economic potential. The project will be implemented through the Guwahati Satellite City Development Authority (GSCDA), a Special Purpose Vehicle wholly owned by the state government.

The Budget has set aside ₹2,100 crore for land acquisition, signalling that the Airport City is no longer just a vision but a project moving towards implementation. A proposed new bridge across the Brahmaputra near the airport is also expected to accelerate the development of the satellite city by significantly improving connectivity.

Globally recognised as an Aerotropolis, the model places an airport at the heart of economic activity, enabling industries, logistics hubs, business districts, hotels, educational institutions and residential townships to grow around it. If realised as envisioned, the Airport City could transform Guwahati into a premier investment destination and strengthen its position as the gateway to Northeast India.

Seeking public support for the initiative, the Finance Minister described the project as an investment in future generations and the foundation of a new chapter in Assam’s urban and economic transformation.
