Guwahati, June 5: Assam’s expanded cabinet took shape on Thursday with the induction of 12 ministers, including four new faces, as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sought to blend continuity with fresh representation in his government.
Among those taking oath were first-time ministers Ashwini Ray Sarkar, Nilima Devi, Sushanta Borgohain and former Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary. Senior AGP leader Keshab Mahanta also joined the ministry, while seven former ministers returned to the cabinet.
The induction of Nilima Devi adds to women’s representation in the ministry, while Biswajit Daimary’s inclusion is expected to strengthen the government’s engagement with the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

Speaking after taking oath, Jayanta Malla Baruah thanked the people of Assam and said the government would continue working towards a safer and more developed state under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Ranoj Pegu expressed gratitude to the party leadership and said the ministers would soon begin discharging their new responsibilities. Biswajit Daimary said he would work with full commitment as part of the Chief Minister’s team and reiterated the government’s focus on development in the BTR.
The cabinet expansion takes the strength of the ministry to 17, with two more berths still available under constitutional limits. Political observers will now be watching closely for the allocation of portfolios, which is expected to provide a clearer picture of the government’s priorities in the coming months.
