Imphal, June 2: Newly appointed Manipur Director General of Police (DGP) Mukesh Singh has stressed the need for close coordination among security and law-enforcement agencies as the Centre deployed two battalions of the CRPF’s elite CoBRA force in the conflict-hit state.
Taking charge as the state’s top police officer on June 1, Singh underscored the importance of collaboration, neutrality and professional policing at a time when Manipur continues to witness tensions, highway blockades and concerns over missing persons linked to recent violence.
Addressing senior police officials soon after assuming office, the AGMUT cadre IPS officer called for stronger cooperation among the state police, central security forces and sister agencies to ensure peace, public safety and confidence among communities.
“Effective coordination, impartiality and professionalism will be crucial in maintaining law and order and serving the people,” Singh said.
The Centre’s decision to deploy two battalions of the CRPF’s Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), a specialised jungle warfare unit, comes amid continuing unrest in parts of the state.
Movement of trucks and essential goods remained disrupted along national highways as Kuki and Naga groups continued bandh and economic blockade measures over the issue of missing persons following the May 13 ambush in which three church leaders belonging to the Thadou tribe were killed.
The incident deepened tensions between Kuki and Naga communities, with both sides trading allegations of abduction and illegal detention.
According to the Manipur Home Department, over 38 people were initially reported missing after the violence, though authorities later said 32 had returned.
Before his transfer to Manipur, Mukesh Singh served as the DGP of Ladakh since January this year.
