Newborn found abandoned at Kohima construction site, rescued by residents

Must read

Kohima, June 17: A newborn baby was rescued and rushed to hospital after being found abandoned inside a container at an under-construction building in Kohima on Wednesday morning, triggering shock and concern among residents.

The infant was discovered around 6 am at a construction site in Lower Bayavü, near the old NCC office, by labourers who had arrived for work.

According to local residents, the workers immediately alerted people in the area after noticing the baby inside the container.

In what many residents described as a timely act of compassion, a woman from the locality swiftly intervened and rushed the infant to GIVF Hospital in High School Colony for urgent medical attention.

Doctors later stabilised the baby before transferring the child to Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK), where the Child Protection Unit has taken charge of the infant’s care and safety.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the locality, with residents expressing disbelief that a newborn could be left behind under such circumstances.

Police and forensic teams have launched an investigation into the case and are working to identify the mother and determine the circumstances that led to the abandonment.

Preliminary findings suggest the woman may have given birth at or near the location shortly before the infant was discovered.

Authorities have appealed to the public to come forward with any information that could assist the investigation, assuring that all information shared will be treated with strict confidentiality.

Officials emphasised that the effort is not solely focused on identifying the individual responsible but also on ensuring that the mother receives any counselling, medical assistance and support she may require.

Community leaders from Bayavü Colony Council expressed gratitude to the residents who acted quickly to save the child’s life.

“The presence of mind and humanity shown at a critical moment helped save a precious life,” a council representative said.

As investigations continue, the infant remains under medical supervision and is reported to be in stable condition.

What began as a shocking discovery at dawn has, for now, turned into a story of survival — made possible by the swift response of ordinary citizens who chose compassion in a moment of crisis.
