Tura, Aug 6: The persistent absence of doctors at the Chokpot Community Health Centre (CHC) in South Garo Hills has triggered serious concern among residents, with the Chokpot Area Vigilance Committee calling it a violation of basic healthcare rights and demanding urgent government intervention.

In a press statement issued by Chamujar Ch. Sangma, Co-chairman of the committee, it was alleged that patients including those in emergency situations have repeatedly gone unattended due to the non-availability of doctors at the CHC.
“This is not an isolated issue but a repeated failure of the health system. Despite multiple petitions and verbal appeals, the government has remained unresponsive,” the statement read.
Sangma added that the poor and vulnerable sections of the community, who rely solely on public health services, are the worst affected by this neglect.
The committee has demanded the immediate deployment of sufficient and qualified doctors at Chokpot CHC, strict monitoring of regular attendance and accountability of medical staff, round-the-clock availability of emergency services and a public response from the government detailing actions taken so far.
Calling the situation both a “public health crisis” and a “denial of dignity,” the Vigilance Committee urged the state government and health authorities to take the matter seriously and ensure timely action.
Reacting to this matter, South Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Sumit Kumar Singh told Hub News, “I will certainly call up a meeting with the DMHO to find all the facts. We had a meeting with the DHS today, and this matter was not addressed, otherwise, it would have been taken care of.”
He further appealed to the public, saying, “I urge the citizens of South Garo Hills that if there is any issue, please come forward. We can always formulate a solution together”, he added.
