Shillong, May 23: On the backdrop of the current tensions between India and Bangladesh, especially after the latter’s interim government’s head Muhammad Yunus’ comments on North East region being landlocked and the narrow Siliguri Corridor and his leaders’ inflammatory statement regarding the region, Meghalaya’s Leader of Opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma on Friday said that no international border should be porous.
Expressing concern over Meghalaya sharing a porous international border with neighbouring Bangladesh, Dr. Sangma said, “Those things have always been taken up with the government of India. We had unfortunately been referring to the international border as far as Indo-Bangla border as the porous border. No international border should be porous for the security reasons, for the social security and for national security. From this perspective, no international border should be porous.”
He also pointed out that smuggling along the international border under the current geo-political situation is very dangerous.
He emphasized the need to alert the government of India and said, “Government of India should crack a whip including asking the states to pull up their socks while aggregating the state and other authorities.”
Dr. Sangma further said he is sure that the state government must have flagged all concerns before the Centre. “I am sure the government of India is seized with this whole situation and whole development that is unfolding and state has only the responsibility of sharing the inputs, sharing the concerns,” he said.
He also stated that the Government of India is responsible for dealing with all the issues pertaining to geo-politics, international affairs, and bilateral affairs between the sovereign countries.
