Resubelpara, June 26: A new agricultural chapter is unfolding in North Garo Hills, as a recent field day highlighted the significant potential of groundnut cultivation to transform farmers’ livelihoods and boost the region’s agricultural landscape.
Organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, East Garo Hills (CAU-I), Meghalaya, the event focused on popularizing the Kadiri Lepakshi (K-1812) groundnut variety, grown under an organic management system.
The initiative, funded by the Indian Institute of Groundnut Research, Junagadh, Gujarat, marks a concerted effort to introduce groundnut cultivation to the district for the very first time.

The demonstration, held at Doba Apal, Resubelpara C&RD block, was a collaborative effort involving BAKDIL, SeSTA, and ATMA, North Garo Hills. It engaged 80 beneficiaries, with 39 farmers from eight adopted villages actively participating in the program.
Dr. Yanglem Sofia Devi, Subject Matter Specialist (Agronomy) and the project’s Principal Investigator, addressed the farmers, emphasizing the showcased technology and the crucial role of groundnut introduction in increasing farmers’ income and cropping intensity. She urged farmers to embrace crop diversification, reducing their reliance on monoculture systems.
Officials from the Department of Agriculture, Dr. Manisha Ch. Momin (ADO) and Ornella K. Sangma (ADO), shared insights on the benefits of groundnut cultivation, including its positive impact on soil health, its suitability for various cropping system practices, and its potential for income generation.

P.N. Raju (ECRP) MSRLS also contributed to the discussion, offering his perspectives on natural farming methods for groundnut. Further enriching the interactive sessions were Tomistar Sangma (CE) and Premika Marak (CE) from BAKDIL, alongside other officials, who provided their valuable opinions and remarks on the demonstrated technology.
The program also provided a platform for beneficiaries to share their experiences. Panchi Marak, Arrillia Marak, and Bringstone Momin expressed their thoughts and experiences with the new technology, with other farmers also contributing their views.
PThe overwhelming sentiment among the farmers was one of enthusiasm, with many expressing their eagerness to join the program again next season. This promising start signals a potential shift towards more sustainable and profitable agricultural practices in North Garo Hills.
