Northeast bamboo conclave charts roadmap for sustainable bio-economy

Must read

Guwahati, Sept 18: The Northeast Bamboo Conclave 2025, brought together policymakers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators from across India and abroad to push forward a shared vision of making bamboo a cornerstone of the region’s sustainable bio-economy.

Organized by the North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC) with support from the North Eastern Council (NEC), the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), and the National Bamboo Mission (NBM), the conclave marked a major step in promoting investments, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, and value-added innovations in the bamboo sector. The event coincided with World Bamboo Day 2025 under the theme “Promoting Investments, CSR and Bio-Economy.”

The meeting was held today.

Inaugurating the conclave, NECBDC Managing Director M.C. Omi Ningshen said the platform was not just for discussions but a “movement” towards harnessing bamboo’s potential for green growth and livelihood generation in the Northeast. He stressed that achieving this vision will require “government support, private sector investments, and active PSU participation” to create scalable market linkages and globally competitive products.

The conclave featured sessions on India’s bamboo value chain, global market potential, MSME promotion, and sustainable value chains, with insights from Amazon, Bamboostan, and the Assam State Bamboo Mission. Success stories from the Northeast showcased how traditional knowledge and modern technology can converge to build resilience and generate employment.

A highlight of the event was the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Numaligarh Refinery Limited and SELCO Foundation for CSR-driven bamboo development, as well as with IIT Guwahati and the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. NECBDC also underscored its recent landmark MoU with the Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI) to develop indigenous bamboo processing machines — a step towards cost-effective, self-reliant innovations.

The discussions gained momentum against the backdrop of recent transformative developments in the region, including the inauguration of Assam Bio Ethanol Private Limited (ABEPL) — India’s first bio-refinery producing fuel-grade ethanol from bamboo biomass — by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Additionally, global investment intent from All Time Plastics, an IKEA partner, to set up a manufacturing unit for engineered bamboo wood has signaled fresh opportunities in sustainable packaging and bamboo-based wood alternatives.

The conclave closed with a high-level panel featuring NEC, NEHHDC, FICCI, SIDBI, and NID representatives, who charted a roadmap for a “Viksit Bamboo Sector for Viksit Northeast by 2047.”

The conclave reaffirmed Northeast India’s pivotal role in advancing India’s bamboo strategy, with participants envisioning a bamboo economy that drives environmental sustainability, regional growth, and livelihoods.
