Tura, Sept 28: The ruling NPP party in Meghalaya has announced the name of Abdus Saleh as its party candidate for the Rajabala bye-election in West Garo Hills and Pyniaid S Syiem for the Mawryngkneng, elections for which are to take place on October 30th. The party is yet to declare name for the Mawphlang seat.
Abdus Saleh is a former teacher from Mahendraganj constituency who entered politics for the first time as an Independent candidate from that constituency and won its bye-election. He went on to win the next election again from Mahendraganj but five years later shifted to Rajabala after the delimitation which made Mahendraganj a reserved seat.
He lost to Ashahel D Shira, Independent candidate in the 2013 elections and again to DR Azad Zaman of the Congress in 2018 elections from Rajabala.
Saleh and Dr Mizanur Rahman Kazi were the two aspirants for the NPP ticket for the bye-elections. It remains to be seen if Dr Mizanur will withdraw from the contest or contest either from another party or as an Independent.
